How to Start a Blog
So you want to share your knowledge, and make some money, but you have no idea how to start a blog. This is your lucky day!
You hear about people making money just by having a blog. Well, it’s not “just” a blog. It’s a super method for anyone to earn a living.
Many people start a blog for personal reasons. They use it as a method for recording their daily lives. They share it with their families so everyone can keep up with the day-to-day lives of the blogger. In this case, no, you probably won’t make any money from your blog. A personal blog is certainly not a bad thing, and there are people who do earn a living within the personal niche, but people want to know what problems you can solve for them. They want to know how you can help them. When you’re looking to help other’s with your content, you need to know how to start a blog the right way.
1. Find Your Niche
Do you have a special skill or knowledge of a topic, or topics, that you can share that will help others? This is where you find your niche before you get started.
So that’s going to be your step 1. Find what you love. Don’t believe other’s who tell you that you can’t write about what you love and make money. You can. It’s not necessarily about the topic when you’re looking to make money. It’s about the work you put into promoting your blog! That’s where most of the effort is going to come from.
Before you even start writing, you need to decide what you’re going to write about.
Originally, my blog was fairly broad. I was going to write about marriage, family, farming/gardening, the midlife years, homeschooling, crafting, and more! Now, these aren’t bad topics at all, but even as a lifestyle blog, this just makes the topics too broad. Since mine and my husband’s lives mostly revolve around farming/gardening, and homeschooling our kids, I decided to narrow my topics a bit. I also, of course, write about blogging, to teach my readers how to start a blog, and make money from home.
I do still write about other topics here and there, but I like to keep my focus on just the few, for the most part.
2. Buy Hosting
While free blogs are all well and good, they’re not nearly as versatile as a self-hosted blog on WordPress. And that’s where Hostgator comes in. You can get your own self-hosted blog for as low as $2.75 a month. With 99.99% uptime, and support that ranks #1 out of all of the web hosting companies, you can rest easy knowing that your site won’t shut down on your visitors, and you will always have the help you need from their support team.
You’ll also get all the help you need to set up your WordPress site up on Hostgator!
3. Create Great Content
Now, don’t just write one post and go live, or promote your blog. You need to prepare. You’re looking to make some money, right? Let’s do this right the first time.
Create quality content. This means that you need to make sure you’re solving problems for other’s. Whatever your niche, you want to be helping others. This is one trick that I’ve learned. Don’t keep information from your readers that they can easily find for free online. This is not how you’re going to make money.
And if you know something that most people don’t, share it! Your first goal is to establish yourself as a knowledgeable, trustworthy friend to your readers. If you try to sell all of the information that you’re trying to get out there, no one is going to read your blog because they’ll go looking elsewhere for that information.
Now that you have your blog all set up, and are ready to start promoting, you also need to think about how you’re going to make money. One of the ways you can do this is with affiliate marketing.
